A consultant gives the homeowner ultimate flexibility and freedom of choice when designing a project. The current marketplace is crowded with many options and terminologies. Sporadic advice can be obtained from friends, neighbors, I.T. guys at work, manufactures’ websites, on line research….. but none of this advice comes from an industry specialist who is focused today on the residential electronics and construction industry, one who understands best practices and solutions, and can give you specific details and advice that pertain to your project. With this challenge, many gather their direction from the electronics integrator who they may pick for their installation. A good referral is valuable, but when you can combine that with an unbiased industry expert to work out the design and budget details, positive results are realized.

As a project collaborator, our conversation starts with someone on the design team or with the homeowner directly. We begin to understand the project as a whole and start to interpret how technology will be included in the spaces. Throughout this process, we provide insight to industry strategies and options, while also supplying budgets and construction details. As we approach decisions, we create a Request for Proposal that will be used as a tool by the General Contractor to hire the local electronics installer integrator. We encourage that relationship and act in an owner’s representative fashion at various stages of the construction. This process philosophy works well with both large projects, and smaller ventures.

Question: I have a small project, I am not even considering hiring an integrator or installer. I figure I will research and source products, use my builder’s electrician to do the wiring, and install the electronics myself. My contractor suggests I should talk to someone. Is that person you? Do you do small projects?

We do consult on small projects and we can be very helpful in connecting the dots and shedding light on ideas and processes. Your contractor will thank you for having a specialist guide your plan and site details, even if you want to source equipment and install the electronics yourself. During those initial conversations, it will become obvious if hiring an integrator makes sense (or not) for your project.

You are lucky to get a solid referral and that is a great first step, but when it comes to electronics systems, that reference may only speak to the merits of the quality of installation, it does not address the personal design process, education in order to make that decision, or the budgets associated with different decisions. Ultimately you very well may hire that referred company, but wouldn’t you like to go into that meeting armed with an understanding of what is available and what certain strategies will cost? Even a perception of a potential conflict of interest starts to get in the way.

You will find good quality electronic integrators across the country generally have the same costing structure. The difference in price usually has to do with the difference in scope – or even the perception of the scope.

When creating a proposal, most installation firms locate the costs of goods and services into one of three buckets. The electronics and installation material pricing are typically set by the manufacturer. The ‘labor’ category covers all the human resources (and overhead) to produce the desired project outcome. Companies typically formulate this labor cost into a ‘per hour’ estimate or sometimes as a percentage of the of the materials installed.

Since most companies pay similar overhead, and most owners try to be competitive, the biggest discrepancy between proposals comes down to the perceptions of the project guidelines. This can create great confusion when comparing proposals.

A properly prepared, industry termed RFP can help to narrow this perception and give the client a more acurate choice between companies.

A loose proposal request, especially if communicated separately by a builder and homeowner, will lead to more confusion and will naturally focus on price, and not the appropriate design criteria for the client.
